Energy Intellect has successfully partnered with a leading Australasian Demand Aggregator, to provide 20 MW of demand side customer load for grid operator Transpower New Zealand’s ‘Demand Side Management’ initiative.
This ground breaking project was designed to manage network constraints and enable Transpower to quickly shed electricity load from the national grid distribution network in periods when unusually high load demand compromised the stability of the network.
This DR (Demand Response) program was designed to immediately reduce agreed amounts of load to ensure reliability of overall supply.
Load reduction is achieved by financially incenting consumers to shed load in response to a specific event. This requires aggregator’s to be able to monitor customer electricity usage in real time and manage shutdowns of equipment and subsequent re-starts, whilst providing site aggregation and load curtailment verification information. In order to enable this automation, the aggregator utilises Energy Intellect’s VM metering and demand response terminal along with the web based Meter Data Management ‘end to end’ remote wireless communications gateway. Data presentation and real time load aggregation display is provided by Clariti.
Energy Intellect provides the aggregator with an online automated DR back office solution. Energy Intellect’s energy measurement and management platform enables a comprehensive set of energy data to be collected in real time in NZ, during a curtailment event, and presented to operators in the aggregators offshore control centre for further analysis and action.
In every ‘event’ the aggregator’s solution has proven 100% effective in meeting their agreed load reduction targets within challenging time frames. This was achieved through the deployment of Energy Intellect’s advanced time interval VM meters programmed to collect 1 minute aggregated load data, which was clearly presented in real time by Energy Intellect’s automated back office and Clariti - Energy Intellect's web based energy information reporting solution.
The sophisticated Energy Intellect technology underpinning the aggregator’s market solutions furnishes aggregator’s with the ability to monitor the health of an electricity grid network and take real time corrective actions when perilous degradation is detected. VM meter hardware can be deployed on strategic grid points or contracted load reduction sites, such as cool stores or other industrial sites that can bear short duration interruption of supply.
